SBnet DSL Setup

Here is the configuration and set up procedure for your Windows and Macintosh OS 8 machines using PUBLIC and STATIC IP addresses. Followed with a few troubleshooting tips.

If you use Dynamic Addressing contact SBnet or your office MIS staff.

Windows 95/98 How-to 

You may need your Windows 95/98 CD to complete this process

1)  From the desktop, right click on network neighborhood and choose properties
2)  Click on the Identification tab
3)  Set the computer name to "DSL###" 
     w/ the ### being the last number group of your machine IP address.
4)  Set the workgroup name to "GW###"
     w/ the ### being the last number group of your machine gateway address.
     Leave the Computer Description box blank.
5)  Click back on the configuration tab
6)  S
elect the TCP/IP that is associated with your NIC (TCP/IP -> Ethernet Adapter)
7)  Choose properties
8)  Set the IP address and Subnet Mask
9)  Click on Gateway
10) Add the Gateway Number
11) Click on DNS configuration
12) Enable DNS
13) Set host name to the name of your computer you set in step #3
14) Set the domain to "sb.net"
15) Add the DNS number (209.241.234.2) to the DNS Server Search Order
16) Add sb.net to the Domain Suffix Search Order
17) Click OK
18) Click OK again

You will have to restart your system

After system restart go to Start/Settings/Control Panel/ and double click on Internet

Click on Connection and set the connection method to Connect using LAN.

You should be able to access the Internet now.


Macintosh, System 8.x How-to 

1) Pull down the Apple and go to Control Panel --> TCP/IP

2) In the TCP/IP window set the the machine to Connect via: Ethernet built-in
and Configure: Manually

3) Using the values at the top of this form, set the IP address, Subnet mask, Router address and Name server address

4) Close the window and "save" when prompted

Your connection should work now!


Troubleshooting Points

Do you have all three green lights lit on the modem?
Do you have a green light lit on the network card next to the network cable jack?
Are you able to access other devices on your internal network?

Go to a DOS or command prompt and type: winipcfg
Click the "more info" button
Does the config info match the TCP/IP info you entered earlier?

Ping your IP address - did it return a value? timeout?
Ping the gateway - did it return a value? timeout?
Ping the DNS - did it return a value? timeout?

Note that "Ping" comes with Windows and Linux. Macintosh users can download the shareware program MacPing from the Internet.
