Here are the steps to change your dialup modem string
(This does not always speed up your connection!):
- double click on My Computer
- double click on Control Panel
- double click on Modems
- highlight the modem you are using to connect to us by clicking on it
(if there's only one, then select that one)
- click Properties
- click on the Connection tab
- click on the Advanced button
- in the Extra settings box, type AT&F1
- click OK
- click OK
- click Close
- And try connecting to us again.
When playing Multi-Player Games, or choosing which site to download
from, you will almost always get a faster connection if you choose a server that is on the
alter.net backbone. Better yet, a server that is on the alter.net backbone, and
is located in, or near Los Angeles.
If you're not sure whether a server is on the alter.net backbone or not, just try to
choose one as close to Los Angeles as you can.
The reason for this is:
SBnet has a direct T1 connection to the GTE's alter.net backbone to Los Angeles. When you
connect to a server in Santa Barbara, the information has to to Los Angeles to get to you.
If you connect to a server in Los Angeles, the information travels only along our T1 to
get to you, which takes almost no time at all! |
