Frame Relay
Overview As a the Internet becomes more and more critical in the operation of your business, it is necessary to reassess the methods in which you access the Internet. The easiest and most cost effective method of access is modem dialup. That is good only for small office with limited Internet usage. But as your usage increases and you conduct critical business communications over the Internet, dialup is usually not good enough. What other alternatives are there for a growing business that depends on the Internet? Frame Relay! What is it? Frame Relay is a connection protocol that runs over the public switched telephone network to establish a permanent virtual circuit (PVC) between your office and your Internet Provider, SBnet. This connection gives you a 24x7 dedicated connection to the Internet. With this dedicated connection, you can run your own mail server, a small web server, video/audio conference, or any Internet services without imposing on your Internet service provider (ISP). The only bottleneck you have is bandwidth. However the equipment used for Frame Relay is easily expandable to accommodate more bandwidth with no new hardware investment. The technology used in creating a Frame Relay connection is very similar to that used by an ISP in connecting all it's customers to the Internet. How does it work? An Internet router is placed on your end. It is configured to connect to SBnet via a Frame Relay line that Verizon installs. This router has an Ethernet connection that lets you connect your entire network to the Internet so every machine will have dedicated and immediate access to the Internet. Each machine on your end can be assigned a static Internet IP address. Configuring each individual machine is very much like configuring them for dialup access. What equipment is required? There are two basic components.
