How fast is ADSL?
ADSL speeds run up to 1.5 Mbps at this time. Please see ADSL Pricing for details.

Can the telephone still be used with ADSL service?
Yes, you can still use your existing phone line for voice communications while using ADSL service for Internet access simultaneously. By using the same telephone line, there's no need for a new telephone number to use ADSL service. Moreover, ADSL modems are designed so that normal telephone service will operate even if the ADSL modem is unplugged or otherwise disabled.

What will happen to the voice features on an existing phone line?
Once ADSL is determined to be available on your existing phone line, all features currently offered on the line will remain available.

What applications work with ADSL?
ADSL Provides More Than Bandwidth: It will change the way your work, the way you live and the way you play. For example, you can attend a meeting from home using video conferencing or surf the Internet at super-charged speeds. SBnet ADSL opens the door to countless applications such as:

High Speed Internet Access: SBnet ADSL solutions  allows users to conduct business and surf the Net at speeds of up to 50 times the rate of a traditional 28.8 Kbps analog modem or up to 25 times the rate of a 56 Kbps analog modem. ADSL service lets you unleash the power of the Internet right into the office.

Video Conferencing: SBnet ADSL provides a cost effective solution for video conferencing that uses packet video techniques over the Internet.

What equipment do I need for ADSL?
An ADSL customer must be equipped with a ADSL modem (provided by Verizon as part of the setup), Network Interface card (NIC) and a personal computer for proper ADSL operation. You must insure the NIC and personal computer are functional.

Optional Equipment

Microservers, Routers and Firewalls can be used with multiuser packages. These products are available at preferred pricing from SBnet and the installation fees, although minimal,  can be partially or fully waived dependent on the package and term of service chosen.

What Operating Systems are supported?

SBnet ADSL supports all modern operating systems. SBnet tech support staff may refer you to your own MIS staff for support issues beyond the scope of our experience.

What limitations or restrictions are there for ADSL?
You must be located a bit less than  three cable miles of a Verizon ADSL-equipped serving office in order for ADSL to operate effectively. This distance will vary depending on such factors as the specific type and condition of the telephone lines. ADSL will not work past remote service units, digital carriers, PBX systems, digital devices and optical multiplexers. SBnet may not always know the technical reason a specific line is disqualified.

What about account limitations?

Each package has a different feature set. Please look over the package descriptions for details.

If you take advantage of the promo you are agreeing to a 1 year term for Verizon circuit cost. If for any reason you discontinue the account before the end of the annual period, you will be charged a fee equal to the sum of the monthly circuit cost for remaining year.

What is the SBnet connection to the Internet like??

SBnet prides itself on quality bandwidth management and reliable, open backbone connections to the Internet. Currently SBnet runs Internet access over 3 full T1 links using load balancing and BGP. We use Cisco 2600 series routers and Adtran CSU/DSUs. Our providers are UUNET, Verizon Internetworking and GST. We feel that using multiple T1 Links gives us more flexibility in bandwidth management along with the obvious redundancy benefits.

What about Bronze Plus?

SBnet is upgrading customers to bronze plus for a $50 change fee. Bronze plus accounts will be sold only for the attended use of the end user and IPs will be changed on a regular basis. Be aware that Bronze plus is different from standard bronze in that it is untested by Verizon for actual speed results. With a standard bronze account your line has been tested for its ability to burst and run at the 256/64 rate. The 768/128 of bronze plus is the technology limit for base DSL, not a rate that YOUR line will necessarily work at, ACTUAL RESULTS WILL VARY GREATLY BASED ON LINE LENGTH AND CLEANLINESS OF SIGNAL. The CIR remains at 10K, the CIR is really what you are buying when you get a dedicated line as it is the prioritization factor within the Verizon Wide Area Network between your computer and SBnet - your gateway to the Internet.

What about using Verizon for my ISP?

Verizon is a great company with a high volume of users. As currently understood, Verizon doesn’t support any operating system other than W9x and requires authentication every use/4 hours.  This information is subject to change based on Verizon development and market decisions. We at SBnet believe we can provide a level of service that matches and exceeds that provided by Verizon.

How quickly can I expect service to be provided once a line is qualified?
Currently, service can be usually provided within 14 days after line qualification. Installation is dependent on Verizon factors such as scheduling, capacity, and technical line problems that may be encountered.

Will I need to install special inside wiring?
Verizon Network Services will provide basic inside wiring, installation of the ADSL modem and installation of one network jack at your premises as part of your setup. Additional inside wiring costs will be borne by the consumer.

Where can I obtain the ADSL modem?
Verizon will provide an ADSL modem as part of your setup, You may receive the modem as a purchase, lease or promotion. Modems are not interchangeable with ADSL systems in other locales.
