"The purpose of Kapatirang Pilipino shall be to
provide creative venues for social interaction
through political empowerment, Filipino/Filipino-
American cultural and ethnic awareness and promotion
of academic excellence at UCSB and its surrounding
communities."

Kapatirang Pilipino translates to Filipino brotherhood/sisterhood. The organization was originally named Pilipino Student Union (PSU). The name as it stands represents the foundation of KP. Although Kapatirang Pilipino has evolved in many ways, including the size of its membership as well as the scope of its focus, the foundation of the organization has always been and still is based on the idea of family.

UCSB's isolated location provides an environment which fosters the unity among the Filipinos students. Indeed, UCSB is no commuter school. Many of its members come as far north as San Francisco and beyond as well as far south as San Diego. Many of our members originate from very diverse communities. The move to UCSB could be overwhelming to those who are not used to an environment wherein the demographics consists of predominantly Caucasian. Kapatirang Pilipino, thus provides a comfortable haven for the new incoming Filipinos, as well as its members who finds solace in the organization.

Kapatirang Pilipino is a Filipino student support organization. However, KP goes beyond this role. It is a Filipino/Filipino-American cultural and ethnic interest advocacy organization. This means that Filipinos and non-Filipinos alikes can join the organization and enjoy the benefits it has to offer. Today, KP is one of the largest ethnic organization and arguably the leader organization within the Asian American community. Asian American activities at UCSB are often led by and supported by Kapatirang Pilipino leaders and members alike.
